Valentine’s Day Treats: Heart Pies

If you are following us on Instagram, you probably saw a sneak peek of this post. I decided to make heart-shaped pop-tarts for breakfast one morning but they actually ended up being more pie like, not that any of us were complaining 😉

For the filling, I did some chocolate with mini chocolate chips…

and some with a homemade strawberry filling. I used fresh strawberries, lemon juice and sugar.

I diced up the strawberries and added  a little sugar and lemon juice and stirred to combine.

For the crust, I just used the refrigerated pie crusts. Follow the directions on the pie crusts for oven temp. I also used sucker sticks for the holders and a heart-shaped cookie cutter to cut out the shape.

Roll out your dough and cut out as many hearts as you can.

Don’t mind the edges of this crust. I’m not sure why it was so dried out. I just cut around it.

Once your hearts are cut out, place a stick in the bottom half of the heart and press into place.

Add filling.

Place second crust on top.

Crimp edges with a fork. Make sure to get where the stick is as well.

I was originally going to leave my strawberries as chunks but decided to puree them up in a food processor just to make them easier to assemble.

Place a spoonful onto the center of your crust being careful not to over fill it because it will leak everywhere. I also added a few chocolate chips to some of the pies with strawberry filling for more of a chocolate covered strawberry taste. These were probably our favorite ones.

Once all the pies are filled and crimped, carefully transfer them with a spatula to a lined baking tray (I used these baking sheets that I got in my VoxBox to help save on the gooey cleanup).

Bake at the temperature according to your pie crust package until the pies are golden brown (about 10 minutes).

Transfer pies to a cooling rack and let cool. While the pies are cooling melt 1/4 cup chocolate chips in the microwave in 15 second intervals. Once completely melted, transfer to a ZipLock bag and snip a tiny corner to drizzle chocolate over the pies.

Lastly, enjoy. These are perfect for tiny hands because of the stick. Who am I kidding I think Dustin enjoyed them more than Brylee:)
